A workplace pension is a valuable employee benefit that helps your staff plan for retirement. By improving your pension offering, you may be able to attract the best talent and increase employee retention rates.

The same is true of other financial benefits, such as life cover and income protection.

However, if you enrol an employee in pensions and protection when they start with the company and never mention them again, they might not be particularly engaged with your benefits package.

A pension and financial wellbeing presentation is a useful way to bring your benefits into the spotlight and ensure your employees are getting the most out of them.

Here are three reasons why these presentations are so important.

1. Many people lack a basic understanding of how their pensions work

Research shows a significant knowledge gap about pensions, and many employees don’t understand what happens to the savings in their pots after they contribute.

For example, according to MoneyWeek, 21% of people surveyed didn’t know their pension was invested at all. Meanwhile, 39% knew their savings had been invested, but weren’t sure where.

Although these figures are UK-based, they highlight a widespread issue around pension knowledge.

Employees may also be unaware that they benefit from tax relief on their contributions or that their employer contributes to their pension.

This misunderstanding could mean that employees don’t recognise why paying into a pension is more advantageous than simply putting wealth into a savings account. This could lead to disengagement from pensions and, in some cases, employees not joining the plan.

Later in life, as they approach retirement, your employees must consider how they will draw an income from their pensions. Without knowing their options for a guaranteed income via an annuity or flexible income withdrawals, they can’t plan.

During our pensions and financial wellbeing presentations, we’ll explain how pensions work, so employees can make decisions from a place of understanding. The most common feedback we receive after these sessions is how valuable and worthwhile people find them.

2. Your employees might not know how much they need to save for retirement

Even if they understand how their pension works, employees may not have a clear idea of how much they should be saving to achieve a comfortable retirement.

A 2025 study reported by Pensions Age found that more than a third of people didn’t know how much they needed to contribute to their pension to achieve a comfortable retirement.

While these are UK figures, the same lack of understanding likely exists in the Channel Islands, and so many of your employees could be unsure whether their contributions are adequate.

As well as discussing the basic mechanics of a pension, we’ll talk about retirement planning at various stages of life, and how your employees can understand their own needs.

As a result, they can begin thinking about their futures and making concrete plans, rather than simply contributing to their pensions each month and hoping for the best.

The session covers key retirement planning topics, including how much you may need for a comfortable retirement, with practical examples of the pension savings required to generate different levels of retirement income.

3. Explaining how to use pension tools gives your employees more control over their retirement

The workplace pension schemes we provide allow employees significant control over their retirement savings. Through the ZIO app, they can:

  • Check the current value of their pot
  • Review and change monthly contributions
  • Explore different investment options
  • Nominate beneficiaries for their pension.

There is also a bank of educational materials available on the app and online, with free access to market-leading resources to help your staff manage their finances. Accessing these materials could help your employees further engage with their pensions and improve their overall financial wellbeing.

To get the most out of their pension scheme, they must know how to access these tools and use them correctly. This is something we can cover in our presentations.

A pension is a long-term investment not normally accessible until 50. The fund value may fluctuate and can go down, which would have an impact on the level of pension benefits available. Past performance is not a reliable indicator of future performance.

The tax implications of pension withdrawals will be based on your individual circumstances. Thresholds, percentage rates, and tax legislation may change.
